Jetpack Adventure + untitled (Throwback Thursday)

Prompts = Scuttle, Birch, Dragonfly

Story New — Jetpack Adventure

It had seemed a good idea at the time: soaring like an eagle or dancing over water like a dragonfly. The jetpack that had been carelessly left, unguarded, inside a mostly secure warehouse (windows are so fragile) became mine. Technically. Finders keepers.

What I hadn’t had in mind was an out-of-control ride through a birch forest, unwillingly strapped to an insane machine. I tried so many ways to free myself, to scuttle the mad mission of being a human arrow looking for a target.

Thankfully, it ran out of gas.

I’m here to return it. No hard feelings.

In the showroom, the kitchen had been magnificent. Rich reddish-brown cabinetry of heartwood birch seemed to glow from deep within the wood. Fabrics thin as silk but as intricate as dragonfly wings served as table linens. The finest appliances in slate grey were set perfectly into the room and made the kitchen as functional as could be.

However, reality didn’t tread the path that planning had laid. The contractors, paid in advance, were no-shows. The showroom emptied and now an empty warehouse. Phone numbers disconnected and e-mails unanswered.

The dream of a perfect kitchen had been scuttled.
