‘Get it together, Giancarlo. You have only one option: accept the commission and make it your best. Now get out there and do what needs doing.’
Giancarlo stared at his reflection in the silver mirror, his face wet from the water he’d just splashed on himself from the porcelain basin. The “bad boy” artist, portrait painter to the city’s most illustrious citizens, had squandered his fees on lavish living and racked up debts when the cash ran out.
However, his salvation was sitting in the other room: an envoy from the Pope. The enormous fee would cover his debts handily.
