The Quagmire

Col. “Mad Dog” Murphy sat staring at field reports, trying to figure a way out of the quagmire he’d been forced into: the locals were hostile; the enemy able to strike with impunity; and his superiors, both military and civilian, were demanding results.
The pills he took for the continual migraine were providing less and less relief.
The only bright spot was Capt. McIntyre’s efforts to ingratiate the troops with the community. Many of the town’s youth had taken a shine to him; playing sports brought smiles and friendship.
Mad Dog worried it wouldn’t be enough to salvage the operation.
