Clyde, The Forgotten Reindeer, Parts 1 and 3 (Throwback Thursday)

Prompts = Reindeer, Tree, Cookie

Story New — Clyde, The Forgotten Reindeer, Part 3

Clyde is the coolest reindeer

Every other reindeer knows

Even the Fat Man said it

We don’t need that glowing nose

All of the other reindeer

Get lost when walking in their homes

They are simply useless

They’re just like those silly gnomes

It’s all me I’ve got to say

Santa’s on his phone

Keeps the cookies to himself

While I place presents in the home

‘Clyde!’

‘Santa?’

‘You are on my naughty list. It’s desk duty for you. Rudolph, thank you for alerting me to this utter disrespect.’

‘No problem, boss.’ Rudolph shot Clyde a “gotcha” wink and smirk.

Story Old — Clyde, The Forgotten Reindeer, Part 1

“Grandpa, what’cha hangin’ on the tree?”

“A reindeer.”

“Which one?”

“Clyde.”

“There’s no ‘Clyde’ reindeer.”

“Sure there is. Reindeer are teamed up in pairs: Dasher and Dancer and all that. Clyde’s next to Rudolph.”

“But Rudolph’s nose glows bright and…”

“And Clyde has radar. Good team.”

“…”

“Rudolph plays the victim: that whole ’no one will play with me’ thing. Not so. Rudolph is upper crust. Highfalutin. Rudolph’s PR team make you pity him, so he’s popular. But no one remembers Clyde.”

“Hi Mom! Grandpa’s been tellin’ me ‘bout…”

“Yes, I heard. Dad — have you been eating my medicinal cookies again?”

Be The Disc

 Photo by Braxton Apana on Unsplash

Prompts = Frisbee, Decade, Coma

I enjoy golfing. I go at the end of the day so I can have the course to myself, take my time as I progress along eighteen holes, even watch as each throw floats through the air towards the flagpole.

Did I forget to mention I play frisbee golf?

I used to play Ultimate Frisbee. I did that for maybe a decade but after taking an elbow to the face and falling headfirst onto a rock, which put me in a week-long coma, I decided it was a younger person’s sport.

Frisbee golf is definitely more my speed nowadays.

Sooper Glew + Barney (2 Fer Tuesday)

Prompts = Guess, Plain, Accept

Story 1 — Sooper Glew

The bottle of “Sooper Glew” was small; the instructions were smaller. The fine print required the type of magnifying glass only used by detectives trying to read microfiche in the early 1900s.

‘Use of this product means you accept the plain language terms of use. The phrase “it works on everything” does not include paper, plastic, metal, porcelain, wood, tile, leather or other animal products. It does include fingers, toes, and other extremities, sofa cushions, and other hard to clean surfaces.’

‘That explains it, I guess.’ I only hoped my left hand and right leg would free themselves sometime soon.

*****

Story 2 — Barney

Photo by Alvan Nee on Unsplash

‘Who did this? Who did this? Barney? Do you know who did this? Because I think it’s plain as day who did this, Barney, don’t you? I know you know who did this, Barney. Don’t you feel guilty? Don’t you feel ashamed? Accept you did this, Barney. It’s right to look remorseful for what you’ve done. Oh my what a mess. I guess you’ve had your fill of food for the week, haven’t you? It’s everywhere! And I guess I’ll have to buy another jumbo bag of food and treats tomorrow.’

The dog looked up hopefully; did he say “treats”?

Clyde, The Forgotten Reindeer, Part 2

 Photo by Norman Tsui on Unsplash

Prompts = Come, Bedrock, Fervent

In depictions of Santa’s yearly ride, eight reindeer are normally portrayed. Rudolph, if included, makes nine. But never are there ten, despite the fact that there were that many stalls in the North Pole stable. The name that’s been forgotten to history? Clyde.

‘Come in, plenty of room up front. Everyone here? Good. It’s my fervent desire to have another successful Christmas. Rudolph, navigation lights. Clyde, radar — keep us from smacking into mountains. You’re the bedrock of the operation. Be ready.’

Clyde basked in the spotlight. ‘Hey Rudy! I’m working on my own theme song, just like you!’

Rudolph glowered.

A Movie Pitch

 Photo by Matthew T Rader on Unsplash

Prompts = Inform, Preclude, Shape

It’s an Errol Flynn adventure movie narrated by Sir David Attenborough: the story of the first honeybee that made hexagonal cells in a hive.

The worker bee (female, of course) realizes the cubical shape being used isn’t efficient. So a drone (male, of course) says “I need to inform the Queen you’re making trouble” so Worker says “to prevent these reforms is to preclude becoming the great swarm we could be” but she gets kicked out along with the tattletale but together they create the greatest bee colony the world has ever seen.

I’m asking for a bargain $50,000,000 budget!

A Tough Negotiation

 Photo by Senjuti Kundu on Unsplash

Prompts = Collector, Lawyer, Tough

‘Tough! No deal!’

Harry Windless, lawyer for a reclusive art collector, grimaced. He’d done deals with obstinate painters, egotistic sculptors, even criminally insane dioramaists. But this negotiation with a precocious four year old prodigy was taking the cake.

‘Mrs. Mundy, can I appeal to your better judgement?’

‘It’s her decision. And part of home schooling. You need to work with her.’

He didn’t know what else to offer. She didn’t want money, tickets to Disney (any of them), a pony, candy… He was lost.

‘You haven’t used the magic word!’

‘Umm… please?’

The girl smiled. ‘Now we can start talking.’

Arithmetic VS Political Critique

 Photo by Hennie Stander on Unsplash

Prompts = Context, Irredeemable, Chess

Principal Eyebrows (Wendy could never remember his name, but he did have enormous furry caterpillars sitting over his eyes) glowered at her. She’d been caught again reading Das Kapital when she should have been practicing arithmetic.

‘You are irredeemable! You need to stop reading that!’

‘Why?’

‘Because it was time to do math!’

‘Do you realize that schools are forced labour camps and teachers are our captors?’

‘We’re what?’

‘I realize context is important. Had I been reading chess texts, I’d have the “Queen’s Gambit” defence, but a political work criticizing capitalism is deemed unacceptable.

‘I… go back to class…’

Global Warming, Perhaps? + untitled (Throwback Thursday)

Prompts = December, Call, Canada

Story New — Global Warming, Perhaps?

Photo by Simon Goetz on Unsplash

Brad’s fishing trip to Baffin Bay wasn’t going exactly as planned; the weather was not inclement, but unexpectedly extraordinarily clement.

Darkness for most of the day was expected for northern Canada in mid-December. What wasn’t expected was his desire to wear shorts and drink iced coffee, perhaps even lounge in a hammock.

So he called the nearest outfitter to order a few items:

Sunscreen

Sandals

Swimsuit

Beach towel

Solar powered fan

Ice box

Ice

Tequila and margarita mix

Little umbrellas

Graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows

If the temperature was going to be tropically hot, might as well enjoy it.

Story Old — untitled

 Photo by Infrarate.com on Unsplash

Ember (nee “December”) watched the screen intently. She was waiting to punch the execution button on a large Call order on Canada Maple Leaf gold coins.

Her mind wandered as the screen hypnotized. What was with her genius parents who’d named her December (they’d wanted to name her after a month, like June, but wanted to do something novel). December — who the fuck named their kid December? Aside from them, of course.

Everywhere she went, she was the Frigid Bitch With Steely Blues despite trying to have a “warm” nickname with Ember.

The number she’d been waiting for flashed — Buy!

It's Raining Sky Rocks

Prompts = Hail, Dump, Online

Normally, Bicycle Officer Cappuccino enjoyed the fresh air as he rode on patrol. Today was not one of those days. For one, it was hailing. For two, he was downwind from the dump and riding closer; an online tipster placed a criminal’s gun there and it was Cappuccino’s job to search for it.

As he rode closer, the hailstones grew bigger; he decided to wait out the storm under an overpass.

‘Dispatch, I’m code… what’s the code for a weather-related delay?’

‘You mean hiding from sky bullets, Frank?’

‘Just list me as unavailable until it stops raining rocks. Out.’

Addicted + Why Are You Embarrassed? (2 Fer Tuesday)

Prompts = Grind, Rise, Relate

Story 1 — Addicted

Photo by Grzegorz Walczak on Unsplash

Blasted game. I hate it.

Every chance I get, I’m online trying to rise in the ranks. But each level requires more time, grinding on mission after mission. And while it feels good to advance, there’s always another ability to earn, another goal to accomplish, more time and energy needed.

I’m anxious all the time. I can’t sleep. When I do manage to drift off, my dreams are filled with fight sequences involving countless faceless enemies keeping me from completing my quests.

It makes me want to scream!

So yeah, I can relate to your love/hate relationship with it.

*****

Story 2 — Why Are You Embarrassed?

 Photo by Tobias Tullius on Unsplash

‘My turn to tell a funny story! Jacob related this one to me when we first met.’

‘Meg? No.’

‘He doesn’t like me telling it but I think it’s hysterical. It happened his freshman year of college when he went home for the holiday break.

‘He’s walking up the driveway and Jack, the family cocker spaniel, races from the house and starts dancing and yelping! But then he starts grinding on Jacob’s leg and very noticeably got a rise out of it, if you know what I mean!’

‘Shoot me. Please.’

‘What? It’s funny. Who’ll go next?’
