The mug stares at me.

The mug of her mug. The handle an ear. “World’s Greatest Dad” its face.

I stare at it. Then look away.

My daughter gave it to me. The love of my life. The only bright spot in a dreary existence.

I love this mug.

But her mother, standing there, smug. She left me for champagne and caviar; I can’t afford beer. Her message on that mug: I despise you. Her feelings for me scrawled across the white ceramic: sheer spite and justified superiority.

I hate this mug.

I turn its face to the cubicle wall.
