Late August. Summer. Long days, hot nights, shorts, and iced lemonade.

Versus early September. Fall. Shorter days, cooler nights, long pants, and pumpkin spiced everything. Not really, but that’s the way it should feel.

Weird how much difference a day or two makes.

I decided to get into the spirit of September by watching a fire in a hearth on a video loop — it’s way too hot to have one going in my house. I made popcorn — microwaved — but imagined it was done over open flame. And I curled around my fleece blanket — it’s way too warm to even touch.

A dark figure stood near a fire burning low in a rusty, battered oil drum, one of many burning in skid row. His fleece-lined suit kept him warm, despite the bitter cold.

“Hey mister, wanna drink?”

A ragged figure staggered up to him, swaying from drink and stinking of poor hygiene.

“No.”

The dark figure reached for a scented cloth.

“Well… want some fresh-popped popcorn?”

The dark figure looked sharply at this unfortunate human.

“You have the microfiche?”

“Nahhhhh… but your friend said to look up.”

Looking up, he spotted the sniper’s laser sight.

New Story — Warm Dreams

Tammy would watch her turtle sun itself under the light set up for that purpose. She wondered if it would be happier being warm all the time. She made a little fleece jacket for it.

She sought funding to make bigger, more durable jackets for sea turtles so they could be warm as they swam dark ocean waters.

The first “volunteer” was fished from the sea…

… Tommy Turtle woke from the dream.

‘You look troubled, Tommy’, said his wife, Toni.

‘Nightmare. Dreaming about humans again.’

‘What happened in this one?’

‘They put us in jackets.’

‘Weird. Sweaters would work better.’

Thiormond Thunderbum spied his prize. In the top room of the tallest tower of a wizard’s castle lay the Fleece of Transformation upon the Turtle Shell of Ultimate Wisdom. And it was his for the taking. Murmuring the oft repeated message, he came to the line “Wear the Fleece”. Wrapping the fleece around his broad shoulders, he envisioned glory for his accomplishment. Dreaming turned to panicked bleating with a last thought “Was it ‘Ware the Fleece?’”
