Little toys for little children. For grownups who work in research labs, we have grown up toys: high-powered lasers, hydraulic presses, more types of radioactive material than you can shake a control rod at.
And sometimes when we play with those toys, science advances.
Like that time I heard this guy at a conference, who’d taken a McDonald’s hamburger and examined it at a quantum level. ‘We discovered the burger is made of quantum burgers’, he’d said. ‘This reveals the fractal nature of Nature!’
‘Were pickles involved?’, I’d asked.
‘Dill, yes. Further pickle research will be conducted, funding permitting.’
